Play Real Money Craps

If you’ve watched any movie or television series that has had a scene within a Las Vegas casino, chances are you know what craps is. There’s a good reason why it’s so popular, and that’s because it presents the perfect balance of luck and tactics. It’s a great game that more and more Canadian gamblers are getting behind, so we’re breaking down the basics of the games here, as well as giving you some key strategies and top tips on which online casinos to play your craps on.

How to play real money craps

In craps at a land-based casino, people will swarm around the table to place their bets while one player throws the dice, deciding the fate of all others playing. The object of the game, basically, is to roll the dice and land on a number that you’ve bet on.

The betting table itself is packed with words, numbers, and dice images, which can be quite intimidating to new players. But, there are some nice simple areas to bet on, such as the field – which returns at odds of 1 to 1 on a dice roll of 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12.

  • When the on/off button is switched to off, it indicates that the “come out roll” is being played, so people bet on the pass line to win on a 7 or 11, but lose on a 2, 3, and 12, or simply continue on any other number.
  • When a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled, the on/off button is switched on and is placed on the number rolled, now referred to as the point. Betting on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 is now available in their respective betting areas – with bets only losing if a 7 appears on the roll.

For example, let’s say the come out roll landed on a 9. 9 is now the point, and you will want the dice roller – known as the shooter – to roll that number again before they hit a 7. If they achieve this, instead of getting the usual instant loss on a seven, you win your pass line bet and get to keep playing, but the button does go from being on to off.

  • The cycle of going on and off continues until you roll a 7 before hitting the point, which is when a new shooter is usually established.

That’s the basic play of craps. There are a huge number of other bets to go through, which we explain in our more detailed article on betting and strategy for craps, here.

Real money craps bets

As explained in the rules section, there are three main areas of betting on the craps table stacked with different betting options. The most important bet is the pass line bet, and then the ensuing number betting areas of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. Betting on the pass line successfully will unlock the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 betting areas, from which you’ll continue to win until a 7 is rolled without the point number coming in first.

The field is also a nice place to bet with odds at evens and seven different numbers backed (2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12).

These three are your main, basic bets for craps, so be sure to check out our far more detailed article on real money craps tactics, strategies, and betting.

Craps odds and house edge

The odds on each bet on the board differ, as you would expect, as does the house edge on each bet. When you play craps online for real money, you can expect house odds of 0% on bets placed on Odds 4 or 10, Odds 5 or 9, and Odds 6 or 8. Other bets range from a nice low house edge of 1.36% on Don’t Pass bets, all the way to 16.67% betting on any 7. You can find a more detailed look at the odds of each of the bets in craps via our specialist article, here.

Craps is all about the numbers rolled on two six-sided dice, so it’s always good to know the probability of hitting each number. Below shows you the probability of each possible number being rolled:

  • 2: 2.78%
  • 3: 5.56%
  • 4: 8.33%
  • 5: 11.11%
  • 6: 13.89%
  • 7: 16.67%
  • 8: 13.89%
  • 9: 11.11%
  • 10: 8.33%
  • 11: 5.56%
  • 12: 2.78%

Variations of online craps

There are many different variations of craps online. You’ll most commonly find the classic craps game as not many people fully understand the game, let alone its variants. In any case, you can also find other craps games by the likes of Crapless Craps, High Point Craps, New York Craps, and Simplified Craps online and in land-based casinos.

Craps apps

You’d be hard-pressed to find a real money craps app sanctioned by a top casino available to Canadians, but you can play craps on apps from top sites as they’ll likely have the game in their table games section.

Craps bonuses and no deposit options

With it being such a unique game, it’s not very likely that you’ll find a specific bonus for craps. However, most welcome bonuses and no deposit bonuses allow their wagering requirements to be fulfilled in part by table games – so playing craps can help you play your bonus and change it into real money.

Live dealer craps

Despite it naturally being a far better game with a crowd of people playing, craps has very few live dealer options at the time of writing. However, Vivo Gaming has created a great live craps game, in which two dealers stand ready, one as the host and one as the shooter.

Strategies and tips

For beginners, it’s best to stick to bets in the pass line, the field, and numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 when available. For the more advanced, taking odds is the best bet on the game as the house edge is reduced to 0%.
